welcome!

spring classes at sandpiper
My spring line-up has something for beginners and more advanced crocheters:
Crochet a Beaded Necklace and Crochet 3 - The Sweater.  Online registration opens
in mid-March.  My
Courses page has detailed descriptions of each class.

The beaded necklace class is very popular and fills quickly.  I recommend enrolling
as soon as online registration opens.  I won't be teaching the necklace class again in
Redwood City until sometime around the holidays.

Because I have to order the book we'll be using in The Sweater class in advance, you
should register early for that class as well.  I will only order as many books as I have
enrolled students.  If you wait too long to register, I may not have a book for you at the
first class!

musings on showing and selling my work in 2009
Due to the sagging economy I've decided to greatly reduce the number of shows I do
this year.  There are many expenses involved in doing a show and unless I'm sure I'll
make a profit, it's not worth it.  If you've ever wondered why handmade crafts are so
expensive, let me enlighten you.  The most obvious reason is the skilled labor
involved.  First you have to factor in the number of hours it takes to make a piece and
the years it takes to acquire the skills to make it.  Then you add the cost of materials.
If my work is in a street show, I've paid a fee to be in show and must pay a
commission on my gross sales.  I also have transportation expenses as well as food
and if the show is far away, lodging.

If you see my work in a gallery or boutique, know that they are taking a commission to
cover their expenses - rent, employees, advertising, marketing, insurance, utilities...

Other expenses I consider when pricing my work include the cost of my website,
e-newsletter, liability insurance, photography...  So when you look at what goes into
the price of a piece, you can see that you are actually getting a great value when you
decide to own my work!

This spring I'll be participating in
Silicon Valley Open Studios at Jen Norton's studio in
San Jose.  I also have work at Orapa Gallery of Wearable Art in Willow Glen.   My
Shows, Shops, and Galleries page has the complete listing.

contemporary crochet
Crochet is akin to making something out of thin
air.  With only a hook and a strand of yarn I create
women's accessories that reflect my artistic
vision.  I use intriguing and exquisite materials to
make my jewelry, felted bags, scarves, and hats.
It is my interpretation of the traditional craft of
crochet.

monthly e-newsletter
Each month I send out an e-newsletter with
information about upcoming classes and
shows, discounts, and other related news.  To
